History of Japanese toothpicks
In Europe, toothpicks have a relatively young history. They became popular among the aristocracy of the middle ages. In Asia, on the other hand, toothpicks whose birthplace is India, travelled with Buddhism to China, Korea and then in 538 AD to Japan.
Originally made of poplar tree wood, the Japanese word for toothpick became yo (=poplar tree) – ji (=branch) or “tsuma-yoji”. Of the "18 Essential Items" that a Buddhist monk was allowed to possess, the first one was a toothpick.
The raw material for the first Japanese toothpicks was obtained from Kawachinagano near Osaka. Thus, the first toothpick makers settled down there and became world-renowned for their quality products. Although most have vanished ever since due to international competition, some specialized makers have survived. The edel+white Japan Picks are still manufactured in Kawachinagano and hence follow the great traditions and craftsmanship of Japanese toothpick making.
Nowadays, a special processing technique has been developed under technical
guidance by the Japanese University Research Centre REC. It combines modern computer-controlled production techniques and the expertise and craftsmanship of a Japanese toothpick producer in the third generation.
